Midterm2

Tyler Burton
Practicum

In practicum I have learned very new things. Practicum is unlike most classes at this campus. It is not the normal read textbooks and listen to lectures class, in this class I learned from working with other students to help make the shows on the Florida Southern Channel.
The studio is where I spent most of my time. In the studio I spent time helping with the Sports show and the news show. On these shows I learned how to do many things that are necessary to make the shows work. I learned how to use the teleprompter. I was able to match the tempo of the screen to the reporter’s speed of talk. Also, I learned how to use the camera. The big cameras were quite different from the regular cameras I was use to, but with help from other students I can now work it. I’ve seen students edit the shows often enough that I now know how to do basic editing on the computers program. There was also a radio show I worked on. I did a pod cast talking about what was happening in the sports world. I discussed my views on current sports news with John, then he showed me how he editted it.
Another way I learned about broadcasting was through writing articles for the news show. I was taught the difference between writing for classes and writing for the show. The students who had written stories before gave me advice on how to write informative and interesting articles.
Florida Southern sporting events were not just a convent way to get hours; they gave hands on experience with live sports broadcasting. I learned how to film sport events to make them look more exciting. By cutting to coaches and the fans in between action the video of the game comes more to life. I also learned how to move the camera from side to side in a smooth motion, so the video would not look shaking, making it look more professional.
In practicum I learned more than just broadcasting skills, I learned life skills. I needed to get eighteen hours of participation before the midterm. With classes, practice, and homework I had to find a way to manage my time. I needed to know when opportunities arose to get hours, so I could schedule my day around it. Another trait needed to prosper was teamwork. All volunteering for practicum hours involved working with at least one other person. I learned to work with others in the studio to help make the shows as good as possible.
Current events on Fridays gave me experience in discussing articles. During others presentations I learned how to take the information given and discuss it with the class. I talked about the changes of the field of broadcasting. In today’s time online media has taken over the traditional media. When others went, I learned how to ask appropriate question when a student is presenting and learned how to answer students questions when I presented. I learned to listen to people talk and respect their opinions. The current events themselves gave me a look at what broadcasting is like in the world today. The technology is always improving making the broadcasting world more and more efficient. I learned that with this new technology new fields in broadcasting are opening up, with online media and other fields.
Practicum has help me learn new skills in the field of broadcasting.
